Banding is a problem in printing that causes an abrupt change in the tonal steps of a blend or gradient. (Banding has also been called stair stepping.) Most banding blends occured using PostScript Level 1 devices for blends that continued over large distances. Banding is far less common in today’s more advanced RIPs. However, banding can still be a problem for large format printing.
